Contemporary Mexican Print Makers Show:

At COSAS May 10-June 30

Art Provides social and political commentary on Mexico Today;

Inspired by Post-Revolution work in early 20th Century

BOERNE, TEXAS – The height of the Modern Mexican Art movement, which took place in the years following the Mexican Revolution, produced works – primarily murals -- of international renown by artists such as Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco. Mexican Printmakers followed their lead in incorporating those social and political themes, such as equal rights, educational access and independence, and introducing them to a mass audience.

Inspired by the post-revolution printmakers of the early to mid-20th century, today’s artists continue to use printmaking as a medium for exploring larger social

matters in the context of everyday Mexican life.

Beginning May 10 and running through June 30, 12 artists involved in Mexican printmaking today will be featured in a rare U.S. exhibition of their works at COSAS Gallery in Boerne.

Artists featured in the show have exhibited their work all over the World – from Brazil to France to Chicago, New York City and Los Angeles – and include Alejandro Colunga, Ismael Vargas, Mario Martin Del Campo, Maximino Javier, Leonel Maciel, Javier Arevalo, Jose Luis Cuevas, Roberto Gil de Montes, Gustavo Rivera, Antonio Ramirez, Alfredo Zalce and Francisco Ochoa.

"Today’s printmakers are making art more accessible to a wider audience of collectors," said Amy Niederhauser, owner of COSAS. "These artists illuminate a variety of viewpoints through social and political satire, fantasy and self-expression. The result is a powerful blend of visual média and the world of ideas and political discourse."

COSAS will host a special opening of Modern Mexico Printmaking during Second Saturday, a special monthly art and wine trolley tour of Boerne’s finest galleries. Second Saturday takes place May 10, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. COSAS hours are Monday-Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday from noon-5 p.m.
